iPhones, Not Textbooks: WA’s Nyiyaparli Kids Help Preserve Critically Endangered Aboriginal Language with New Smartphone Game

Innovative smartphone game teaching and reviving the Nyiyaparli language — one of the world’s most critically endangered, with only 8 fluent speakers left. It flips the tech debate on its head: instead of pulling kids away from screens, it uses screens to save language and culture. TheNyiyaparli Widi(‘widi’ means game in Nyiyaparli) game transforms phones from a distraction into tools of cultural survival. The game is co-designed with the Nyiyaparli community and features voices of Elders, parents, and kids.

The Nyiyaparli people are the Traditional Owners of over 36,000 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Front page: Kade Davey capped off his 2025 Toyota 86 Scholarship Series campaign with a history-making performance at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia, clinching third in the overall series standings.

Davey, a descendant of the Mandjindja tribe from the central desert of Western Australia, etches himself in history as the first Indigenous driver in Australia to place in the top three positions in a Motorsport Australia national championship.

Films screening at the Second Annual Shoalhaven First Nations Film Festival explore themes that celebrate the achievements of First Nations People while recognising there is still a long way to go to achieve rightful justice and equality.

Retirement out of the question for ‘silver fox’

AN Aboriginal man in Tasmania is taking advantage of his signature ‘silver fox’ looks, as he struts it up on the catwalk and in advertising campaigns.

Danny Saunders, 65, resides in Launceston in northern Tasmania, but is originally from Queensland.

He is a Registered member of the Wardingarri Corporation and Native Holder of the Iman Nation of the Upper Dawson Valley Carnarvon Gorge region Queensland. He grew up on the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland, going to school in Ravenshoe and Mareeba, and moved to Tasmania in the 1980s.

Opening a dedicated shopfront in Brisbane’s CBD, being part of a First Nation contingent of businesses to Japan for World Expo recently, having her designs on show at the recent Brisbane Fashion Week and launching an exhibition of her work last week, Delvene is in hot demand.
