Burn-off protects koalas

The koala population on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke) might not appreciate the recent “picture perfect” hazard reduction burn-off, but local rangers know it’s all for their protection.

In their first burn since 2006, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) rangers used their knowledge to read the Country and carry out a lower intensity burn.

QYAC joint management coordinator Darren Burns said the modern technology-assisted burn reduced thick undergrowth and closed sedgeland swamp around the Flinders Swamp area.

“The burn-off will greatly mitigate the risk of intense summer wildfires and protect the island’s significant koala habitat,” Mr Burns said.

The burn was conducted by Traditional Owners in collaboration with Queensland Government agencies and Seqwater.

The satellite-imaging from the burn-off shows more than 440 hectares of land in a “a picture perfect mitigation burn”…
