Festival brings young mob to the ballot box
In February, almost 5000 people descended on the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in Shepparton on Yorta Yorta country, Victoria, for Treaty Day Out.
The mini music festival was organised to bring people together to vote in a by-election for the First Nations Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, north-east division, to replace former member Nartarsha Bamblett who stepped down last year.
Musical acts included Archie Roach, Yothu Yindi, No Fixed Address, Scott Darlow, Alice Skye, Madison Colville Walker and others. After the votes were counted, Travis Morgan was confirmed as the successful candidate.
Mr Morgan is a descendent of the Yorta Yorta and Wemba Wemba peoples and grew up within the Aboriginal community of Echuca.
